What is an MRI?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of today's most advanced medical diagnostic imaging modality. MRI is used to capture images within the human body and vascular system.  This is a non-evasive imaging procedure with no known side effects.  MRI utilizes a large magnet, state of the art computer systems and radio frequency waves similar to AM/FM radio to produce high quality images of the human body.

Open MRI and Staff

Is Open MRI Safe?

Yes, it is very safe.  MRI technology does not rely on ionizing radiation as do many X-Ray and CT scanning.  The procedure is painless.  You won’t see or feel anything.  You will hear a quiet, tapping sound that indicates the scan is in progess.   You may bring a CD or cassette tape or play your favorite radio station, to help make your exam more relaxing.

What Should I Wear?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that doesn’t have any metal on it.  A sweatshirt and sweatpants are ideal.   If you are scheduled for any type of head or brain exams, do not wear any makeup (especially eye makeup) and do not use hairspray and gels.   Some of these products may contain a metallic base which may interfere with the exam.  Please do not wear any form of jewelry:  earrings, bracelets, watches, rings, and necklaces.

How Long is the Procedure?

The procedure lasts approximately 45 minutes.  During the procedure, the technologist will ask you to lie still on a comfortable, padded table.

What Will Happen to Me?

After your registration is completed, the MRI technologist will review your medical history with you again and explain the MRI procedure to you.  You will be positioned on the padded scan table and made as comfortable and warm as possible.  You will then be moved to the center of the magnet (which is where the magnetic field is the strongest).  The technologist will leave the scan room at that time.  Do not be alarmed.  The technologist will be observing and communicating with you throughout the entire exam.  You will hear a quiet tapping sound that indicates the scan is in process.  You will not be able to move or talk during the tapping.  Some procedures will last from 45 minutes to one hour.

Open MRI is specifically designed for claustrophobic patients and those who are not comfortable in traditional cylindrical style MRI scanners.  We are also able to scan pediatric patients, as well as those with large builds or those apprehensive about the procedure.
